[1] Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; [2] A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. [3] For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. [4] For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: [5] Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

  • The second covenant is different from the first but not for the reason people often think. They are also the same because God is the same. We do not earn salvation because it is by grace.
  • Moses and Jesus were in agreement.[1]
  • There appears to be a difference in the Old covenant and the New but what is that difference?
  • The first Covenant was through Moses while the second was with Christ who was more excellent than Abraham and Moses.
  • Part of the problem was with the people who were at fault.

[6] But now hath he obtained a more excellent[2] ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better[3] covenant, which was established upon better promises. [7] For if that first covenant had been faultless[4], then should no place have been sought for the second. [8] For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: [9] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. [10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [11] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. [12] For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. [13] In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

  • A main difference was that the law must be written on your heart in the new and not just preformed. The performance of works is still required because works are the evidence of faith and if there were no works or little works or works of iniquity then we know that there is no real faith.[5]
  • Christ made it clear that you not only could not commit adultery but you cannot even want to commit adultery.[6]
  • Understanding the will of God and the kingdom is not just about studying and words or phrases but is dependent upon revelation. Flesh and blood[7] does not reveal that understanding.
  • Jesus said if you want Eternal life you had to Keep the Commandments.
  • So in essence the covenant is the same except you not only have to keep those commandments but you must want to do it because you love Christ and the commandments he gave us which the whole law hinges upon.[8] They must be written on your hearts.[9]

  5. James 2:14 ¶ What [doth it] profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
  6.
