Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the [[world]] through lust.

Comments 2 Peter 1
Peter calls himself "a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ". The word servant is from the Greek doulos meaning "a slave, bondman, man of servile condition"[1] Like the Levites he belonged to God.
Early Christians were partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world?
The phrase "through the knowledge of him" has to do with faith in Christ. Many claim that faith but Christ tells us many will say they come in His name but he never knew them.[2]
Peter's progression is from faith to virtue[3] and from that virtue which is action we may come to knowledge[4]and from knowledge to temperance[5] and from temperance to patience[6] and from patience to godliness.[7]...
If we are diligent[8]for Christ said we must strive for the way is narrow.
  • 2 Timothy 2:15 Study[8] to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Without that diligent striving you may become barren or unfruitful in the knowledge[9]of our Lord Jesus Christ.
"But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off..."
"...rather ... give diligence[8] to make your calling and election[10] sure."
What "world" and what corruption is Peter talking about. His kingdom is not a part of that world.
Do we believe in fables?
: 1 Timothy 1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
1 Timothy 4:7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
2 Timothy 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Titus 1:14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
What was the Christian conflict with Rome?
How does the Modern Christian Church differ from the early Church?
What Fables might we be devising through our private interpretation? The phrase private interpretation is from two words private[11] interpretation[12]
[2 Peter 1:1]

2 Peter 1

1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge[9] of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine[13] power[14] hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life[15] and godliness[16], through the knowledge[9] of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption[17] that is in the world through lust.

Peter's progression

1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence[18], add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge[19]; 6 And to knowledge[19] temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge[19] of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence[8] to make your calling and election[10] sure[20]: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Be not Negligent

1:12 Wherefore I will not be negligent[21] to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. 13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; 14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. 15 Moreover I will endeavour[8] that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

Devise not fables

1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation[11][12]. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

    • According to recent lexicon edited by Arndt and Gingrich the adjective aionios is presented as having three meanings, in none of which the limiting sense of “age” is carried over from the noun. The adjective, it is claimed, means: (1) without beginning; or (2) without end; or (3) without beginning or end.
    • A. T. Robertson in his WORD PICTURES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT says the adjective “aionios . . . means either without beginning or without end or both” (vol.1, p.202).
    • In the THEOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT Hermann Sasse admits some passages aionios "weakened”. He suggests that some passages use “the eternity formulae” as “the course of the world” perceived as “a series of smaller aiones” and simply could mean “lifelong” or “enduring”. (p.208).

Matthew 24:38 "For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come."
Luke 14:18 "And they all with one [consent] began to make excuse.
