While it more commonly appears as "''that believe not''" ''apistos'' also appears as ''unbeliever'' and even ''infidel''.

And he said, Of a child. 22  And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23  Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.</Ref>

Again this same story and even though people were impressed with his power to heal he warned his apostles that he would be taken by men.<Ref>Luke 9:44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.</Ref>

The word appears in Jesus explanation of the parable about the ''faithful and wise steward'' who is found  ''doing''<Ref>Luke 12:43 Blessed [is] that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.</Ref>
and the one who knew his will and did not prepare his life according to the will of the master<Ref>46  The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
47  And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
</Ref> was considered an unbeliever.

It is always true that we will never earn the grace and forgiveness of God where he owes it to us. But if we do His will and live according to His ways then he may choose to bless us with His [[grace]] and [[mercy]]. If we are disobedient that is evidence we are ''not believers''. The [[fruit]] of true faith is obedience to the word.


: [[John 20]]:27  Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless <apistos>, but believing.

So we see the word used in John only in the incident with doubting Thomas.
