The common noun for dead or death is maveth [1] and consists of three Hebrew letters MemVavTav. Mem is the letter for flow while Tav is the letter for faith with a Vav connecting or dividing those two ideas. Someone without faith is cut off from the flow of life.

The verb for die is the same three letters[2]

In the Greek text we several words translated dead including nekros[3] and apothnesko[4]

There is also teleutao[5] which can mean to die or be dead or simply decrease or finish.

The word thano [6] also means be dead or die but can mean in spiritually dead.

In the Bible we see Jesus use the term nekros in:

  • Matthew 8:22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
  • Luke 9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
