If religion is how you take care of the needy of society then the modern welfare system is a religious program that uses force. When Christ appointed a kingdom to His Little flock He forbid them to "exercise authority one over the other" in the practice of Pure Religion. A Christian conflict arose between the early Church and Rome as the people of that once great nation continued to degenerated into "perfect savages" as Polybius predicted.

Define Great

What makes a nation Great?

The Bible prophesies that God will make the seed of Abraham great. Abraham had three different women by which he produced offspring. Sarah who produced Isaac and Haggi by which he produced Ishmael and after Sarah died he married Keturah who produced Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

Abraham was blessed by Melchizedek and he blessed Isaac. The reference to all these sons producing a "great nation" went to Isaac while other blessings went to other offspring of Abraham. But there are two words translated "great" in that prophecy. The first is gadowl[1] GimelDaletVavLamed or the shortened form gadol GimelDaletLamed. Those three letters are said to form several different words as nouns, verbs and adjectives. They include ideas of great numbers, loud or even important and are also associated with the idea of twisting thread together or forming a fringe[2].

That fringe is much different than the common word for fringe[3] TavAyinYodAyin.

Great GimelDaletVavLamed

  • "And I will make of thee a great[1] nation[4], and I will bless thee, and make thy name great[5]; and thou shalt be a blessing:" Genesis 12:2

The Gimel includes the concept of Reward and Punish, Cause and effect.[6] and is also the first letter of the word nation. The secondd letter is the Dalet[7] which is often connected with the back and forth of charity and its flow of give and take.

The Vav[8] connects the last letter which is Lamed[9] which is associated with the work of the hands.

Most nations today do not operate by charity but by taxation. The most predominate governments throughout man's history were composed of voluntary societies. It was not until Cain and Nimrod began producing governments that offered benefits by the exorcising authority over the people that support of that government was enforced by the common purse and central treasury.

These systems where the leaders rule over the people but call themselves Benefactors are based on the law of the Father. They eventually depend upon causing the people to go into debt by borrowing against the labor of future generations, making themselves merchandise and cursing their children.

In the same prophecy we see a second term translated great.[5]

Genesis 17:20 "And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great[1] nation[4]."

It is the social virtues of society that makes a people great. The lack of social virtues and the degeneration of society comes about when the people become accustomed to living at the expense of others and the habit of being benefited through covetous practices.

"And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these [is]" charity." 1 Corinthians 13:13

Without the exercise of choice there is no charitable practices

After all, “Freedom is the Right to Choose, the Right to create for oneself the alternatives of Choice. Without the possibility of Choice, and the exercise of Choice, a man is not a man but a member, an instrument, a thing”. Archibald MacLeish was an American Poet, playwright, essayist, Librarian of Congress, lawyer. (1892 – 1982)

Greatness

If Americans want to make America great again they need to understand what made it relatively great in relationship to other nations of the world. It was not their government or their reliance upon that government. It was not their constitution although it successfully limited the power of government for the first few decades.

The prosperity and affluence that was unleashed by the pervasive liberty generated in the America society provided fertile ground in which the seed of narcissism could find root. Only when virtue is regularly cultivated will righteousness prevail. Where vice is sown and allowed to regenerate season after season the fields of the world will spread and erode the life of society.

There appears to have been a generational increase in symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Narcissism does not really exist except in the minds of psychiatrists and pseudo intellectuals. It is a medical diagnostic label used to identify and classify symptoms for medical treatment.

In the old days these disorders were merely called sin and sin was simply “missing the mark” of what we would identify as order, good or righteousness. Today, the religionist might think of sin as the problem but in fact it is only the symptom of the problem. The problem is that we made or are making choices that drive or pull us to disorder which produce activities which society may label.

Comorbidity

Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, jealousy, and pride have as a common factor of putting self before or above others. While, chastity or faithfulness, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility all have as their common denominator the sacrifice of self for the sake of others. Vice is simply the imbalanced absence and lack of steadfast social virtues.

It is the willingness to lay down of the life of our self for the sake of justice and mercy for others in faith that allows mankind to produce a life and economy of more abundance.

If we fail to make the natural sacrifice that righteousness for all requires the heart becomes depleted of natural virtue. A dysthymia will result as life becomes unjustified and without any purpose but self. When prosperity and affluence become the common goal and purpose more than reason and righteousness people may attempt to fill the void in their soul with pursuits of self-indulgence rather than true happiness. Without the righteous pursuit of happiness for ourselves and our neighbor's life and liberty within society will diminish.

“I want to imagine with what new features of despotism could be produced in the world: I see an innumerable crowd of like and equal men who revolve on themselves without repose, procuring the small and vulgar pleasures with which they fill their souls. Each of them, withdrawn and apart, is like a stranger to the destiny of all the others: his children and his particular friends from the whole human species for him; as for dwelling with his fellow citizens, he is beside them, but he does not see them, he exists only in himself and for himself alone, and if a family still remains for him, one can at least say that he no longer has a native country.”
“Above these an immense tutelary power[10] is elevated, which alone takes charge of assuring their enjoyments and watch over their fate. It is absolute, detailed, regular, far-seeing, and mild. It would resemble paternal power if, like that, it had for its object to prepare men for manhood; but on the contrary, it seeks only to keep them fixed irrevocably in childhood; it likes citizens to enjoy themselves provided that they think only of enjoying themselves. It willingly works for their happiness; but it wants to be the unique agent and sole arbiter of that; it provides for their security, foresees and secures their needs, facilitates their pleasure, conducts their principal affairs, direct industry, regulates their estates, divides their inheritances; can ir not take away from them entirely the trouble of thinking and the pain of living?”
“So it is that every day it renders the employment of free will less useful and more rare; it confines the action of the will in a smaller space and little by little steals the very use of free will from each citizen. Equality has prepared men for all these things: it has disposed them to tolerate them and often even regard them as a benefit.”
“Thus, after taking each individual by turns in its powerful hands and neading him as it likes, the sovereign extends its arms over society as a whole; it covers its surface with a network of small, complicated, painstaking, uniform rules through which the most original minds and the most vigourous souls cannot clear a way to surpass the crowd; it does not break wills, but it softens them, bends them, and directs them; it rarely forces one to act, but it constantly opposes itself to one's acting; it does not destroy, it prevents things from being born; it does not tyrannize, it hinders, compromises, enervates, extinguishes, dazes, and industrious animals of which the government is the shepherd.” ” Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville, Chapter 6 What kind of Despotism Democratic Nations have to Fear, p667

The most dangerous game

Guns, marijuana, alcohol and tide pods are all “Dangerous!”

Their use should be regulated.

The question is by whom?

People are “Dangerous” too.

But the most “Dangerous!” thing of the last century and one of the most dangerous things throughout the history of man is government.

This includes not just war on terrorists but also on drugs and poverty.

Government attempts to regulate "illegal substances" has not only increased the police powers of government, thereby reducing the right of the people, but it has created an underground criminal industry which perpetrates violent gangs and murder all over the world. It has also made criminals out of millions of people who have done little or no harm to anyone and are often being incarcerated in a growing "prison industrial complex" at unbelievable expense to themselves and a hefty bill for the taxpayers. At around $50,000 per inmate, costing taxpayers 50 billion dollars annually nationwide incarceration is not “paying your debt” to society but adding to its debt.

When people give the government the right and responsibility to make choices for them and their neighbor they are giving government power. Power corrupts. The power to choose and regulate guns, marijuana, alcohol, tide pods, and purse should be in the hands of the people but the responsibility and repercussions of bad choices should also rest with the people.

“When the taste for physical gratifications among them has grown ... the time will come when men are carried away and lose all self-restraint... It is not necessary to do violence to such a people in order to strip them of the rights they enjoy; they themselves willingly loosen their hold... they neglect their chief business which is to remain their own masters.” Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America Volume 2.

People should regulate their own use of Guns, marijuana, alcohol and tide pods etc. but the right to be free to choose includes the responsibility for the choices you make.

Yes, Guns, marijuana, alcohol and tide pods should be regulated by individuals but only by those individuals who will take full responsibility for their lives and the choices they make. In other words if people lose their jobs or even injure themselves by abusive bad choices they should not be bailed out by government welfare, social security, Medicaid or Medicare. They should not be rewarded for self-indulgence and wanton abuse and adulteration of their own bodies and lives.

This does not mean that the individual may choose to aid or help the unfortunate wretch in his iniquity. But it should be by choice people take each case of need and through individual charity or systems of free association that relief may come.

To use force instead of charity in society is to kill care for one another and will open the gates of hell and give rise to the spirit of tyranny.

The price of greatness

Before anyone considers legalizing substances previously controlled by government they may need to also legalize the consequences of the abuse of those substances. If people make bad choices they should, indeed they must, be allowed to suffer the consequences of those bad choices without government intervention.

To force those who worked and paid for their education or the learning of skills to pay for others who made bad choices, were less frugal or even slothful and greedy is the definition of injustice. To force the sober man to pay for the insobriety of the self-indulgent alcoholic is also unjust. To require by force of law to finance the care of those who indulge themselves into ill health is robbing the industries to finance sloth and decays the social fabric of society.

With the great power of choice, we call liberty, comes great responsibility. Without that stipulation society itself will degenerate into a mob of immoral souls and the foolish will take license to burden the wise were their self-indulgence.

In fact, this has already happened in many areas of society. Somewhere in the evolution of American society it has become acceptable to take from your neighbor by force what you think you need to be secure and safe. That was listed as a sin one time by Jew and Christian, even Muslim at one time but they all seem to turn a blind eye to this moral provision of coveting they neighbors goods in today's modern world.

“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” Alexis de Tocqueville

Every year people allow governments to raise the debt ceiling which curses the next generation with the debt of their present desires. Our parents in their blindness did it to us and we do it to the next generation if they are allowed to be born at all. America is no longer great, not because of corruption or the swamp of government, but because of the corruption in our own hearts and minds. Desiring benefits at the expense of your neighbor was a sin among Christians from the beginning. It was the "wages of unrighteousness", the wages of sin.

Americans use to take care of all social welfare of society without looking to the use of force through government institutions. Any institution of government that provides for the social welfare of the people is a move toward socialism and a socialist institution.

Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.” Alexis de Tocqueville

You cannot blame government for the present loss of freedom or stench arising from your own covetous practices. After all governments are instituted by men and it is our choices to look to governments of the world rather than one another. We have created the swamp monster through our own wantonness, sloth, and our selective blindness.

Many will cry that such social discipline is not kind but many of those who complain probably already have spoiled children or are those spoiled children themselves.

Almost everyone who thinks government welfare is the solution for social problems also believes in evolution. Guaranteed entitlement benefits or bail outs with no regard for individual bad choices undermines society by obfuscating the principal factors of evolution models. "Survival of the fittest."[11]

“Princes made violence a physical thing... despotism tried to reach the soul by striking crudely at the body; and the soul, eluding such blows, rose gloriously above it. Tyranny in democratic republics does not proceed in the same way, however. It ignores the body and goes straight for the soul.” Alexis de Tocqueville

The good Samaritan, not the government, pulled the battered man from the ditch who ended up in that desperate state through no fault of his own. If the wounds were self-inflicted a different strategy and criteria may need to be applied for the Samaritan is aiding both the victim and the abuser. Governments are not proficient at such soulful discretion because they are incapable of it.

Charity is the practice of choice in being good and goodness is the product of the soul. Government has no soul for it is the institution of man, not God. Governments can only choose to offer or give away what belongs to others. There is no charity in that unless what the government has is freely given. Governments which tax the people only have to give what they have taken away from others at the point of a sword. These are not institutions of charity but of force.

"The greatness of America lies not in being more enlightened than any other nation, but rather in her ability to repair her faults." Alexis de Tocqueville

The reason that I am constantly quoting Alexis de Tocqueville is because he saw what made America great and to encourage the post modernist American that if a Frenchman can figure out the problem a true and moral American should be able to institute the solution.

If people want to make America great again they need to start taking back their individual responsibilities. Until Americans, or any people, succeed in a democracy or a republic they need to wake up to the fact that to enjoy rights requires that you manage your responsibilities and duties for yourself and to your family and to your fellowman.

This was always done through what the gospel calls Pure Religion.

People would like to think that democracy is the answer and it would be if not for the people. The problem with most democratic legal systems and the people in them is they are just as addicted to governments and their benefits as they are likely going to be addicted to other substances currently restricted by government.

“Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.” Alexis de Tocqueville

It is not moral to force one neighbor to provide for another. It is certainly not charity. Tocqueville observed what made America great was its charitable and philanthropic associations of the people within every community, village and township.

"Americans group together to hold fêtes, found seminaries, build inns, construct churches, distribute books, dispatch missionaries to the antipodes. They establish hospitals, prisons, and schools by the same method. Finally, if they wish to highlight a truth or develop an opinion by the encouragement of a great example, they form an association." Alexis de Tocqueville 1840, 596.

Once the people imagined that it was moral to take away from one neighbor to provide for society they became blind to the process of their own enslavement.

"The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money." Alexis de Tocqueville

Americans have sold their right to manage their own affairs for the right to take from their neighbor through government force. If Americans are going to see again and return to liberty they must see their own folly and sin, and return the responsibility of choice and the repercussion of bad choices back to the people.

Do we demand our liberty back before we are willing to take back the responsibilities of society that Tocqueville saw making America great. We must take back our responsibilities first and have a right to do so in what Tocqueville  called free association.

"In the United States, as soon as several inhabitants have taken an opinion or an idea they wish to promote in society, they seek each other out and unite together once they have made contact. From that moment, they are no longer isolated but have become a power seen from afar whose activities serve as an example and whose words are heeded" Alexis de Tocqueville 1840, 599.

He did not see the people looking to government. In truth the best men of society did not seem to think it was a noble pursuit.

“I do not know if the people of the United States would vote for superior men if they ran for office, but there can be no doubt that such men do not run.”  Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America

Those who do seek the office of modern government must keep close to their hearts an understanding the forces that both may build and destroy society. Those forces rest first in the hearts of men and not in the seat of government.

To make our political goal the alleviation of the burdens of bad government from the people is like trying to produce a hangover free alcohol or withdrawal free heroin. To remove the pain of bad government may be counterproductive to awakening the people or weaning them from their addiction to socialism.

“It is indeed difficult to imagine how men who have entirely renounced the habit of managing their own affairs could be successful in choosing those who ought to lead them. It is impossible to believe that a liberal, energetic, and wise government can ever emerge from the ballots of a nation of servants.” Alexis de Tocqueville

But it also may be counterproductive to do nothing for that would certainly not set the good example of mercy. The man lying in a ditch of self-inflicted addiction may still need a hand up but not without applying the necessary incentive for a more moral behavior in the future, or any act of mercy may be void of mercy. So the question remains the same, How do you help the poor or those deprived of rights to choose without weakening them.

If do not give back the full responsibly correlative to rights at the same time you give back the liberty of the people to choose for themselves then you may be held responsible for their choices.  Can we in good conscience give loaded gun to a small child or your car keys to a drunk?

There is no solution to return to a state of liberty without first returning to a state of morality, virtue, and responsibility. Ultimately those who want their rights back must be allowed to suffer the consequence of their abuse of liberty if they are going to enjoy liberty.

That is Natural Law.
