What was the sin in the camp of the golden calf? Was it idolatry? Is Idolatry covetousness?[1]
They were setting up covetous practices, a partially common purse, a central treasury, that could lead to the Corban of the Pharisees and a returning to Egypt and the way Nicolaitans as all socialist states do.
God endowed man with choice and the power to choose.[2]
We call that individual power of choice rights and liberty.
If we give that choice to others or the power to make choices for us, then we mock God. When the people put their wealth in this institution, this reserve fund set up by Aaron they no longer had direct power of choice over that wealth which God had given them when they left the bondage of Egypt.

V1-3 LORD said that he will write on two tables of stone Moses has to hew because he broke the first ones.
"When God made man in his own image, the moral law was written in his heart, by the finger of God, without outward means." "The first and the best evidence of the pardon of sin, and peace with God, is the writing the law in the heart."[3]
And there must be consequences even if you are forgiven. That consequence may be in the form of recompense. Without recompence there is no justice nor mercy. Do criminals pay their debt to society today?
And no man shall come up this time. Those who were allowed to come closer to God are now barred. What was the sin of the Golden calf? What is idolatry?[1]
V5 proclaimed[4] the name[5] of the LORD.
The "Lord now descended ... and stood with him there; not Moses stood with the Lord, as the Vulgate Latin version; but the Lord, or the cloud in which the Lord was, stood near to Moses: and proclaimed the name of the Lord:"[6]
V6 The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.
The term merciful is translated from רַחוּם‎ rachuwm[7] meaning "compassionate" from רָחַם‎ racham meaning to love, love deeply, or to have compassion, be compassionate.
and gracious is translated from (חַנּוּן‎) channuwn[8] said to mean gracious but from 02603 חָנַן‎ chanan[9] meaning to be gracious, show favour, pity. What is Gods criteria for that graciousness?
Included in His name as His nature is longsuffering which is from two words that mean slow to anger and wrath. The wrath is the cause and effect consequences which will include mercy tempered with recompence. And finally his name includes an abundance in goodness and truth because it is an active force in the Law of nature for justice and mercy.
V7 While He preserves mercy for thousands, forgives iniquity and transgression and sin, but he also is "visiting (paqad)[10] the iniquity of the fathers upon the children" for generation.
8-9V Moses bowed down submitting so that he could and plead again for the people.
10-11V Makes a covenant but they will need to observe what he commands. They were to be a priests setting an example to be like God intended.[11]Many fail to properly determine exactly what that looks like. They do not understand the roll of a priest within all forms of government.
12 "Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant lest it be for a snare[12]." How does eating the dainties of rulers become a snare.
13V destroy[13] <overthrow> their altars. It may sound like they are to violently overthrow or attack their altars but did God require that they attack the Egyptians? Were the Levites called to murder or even kill those 3000 who wanted to enter the camp but would not consecrate themselves to the way of God?
14V "worship no other god:" bow down to no other ruling judge. That would mean to serve them in hope of some advantage. You can make men ruling judges by making covenants with them or sitting and eating at their tables because those benefits served are a snare and can make you merchandise and curse children.
15V "Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring[14] after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;" Their sacrifices are the dainties of rulers and the wages of unrighteousness that we should not have an appetite for because they degenerate the people and turn the masses into perfect savages ushering in tribute of tyrants who exercise authority. Because you are biting one anther you are devoured. When Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law was he redeeming us from the law of our own contracts? Herod's contract with the people designed by the Pharisees but through their baptism and subsequent system of Corban was making the word of God to none effects because it was based on covetousness which is idolatry.[1]
16V Exodus 34:16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring[14] after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring[14] after their gods.
17V no golden calf where you melt you private wealth in a common purse.[15]
V18 No feast/welfare bread by by cruelty which is what the leaven means.
V19-20 the rule of sharing through charity the firstfruit should be applied.
V21 Sabbath which is work first and then rest.
V22-24 Attend the feasts where none show up empty and he will cast out you enemy.
V25 no blood in the sacrifice
V26 Firstfruit given to the house of the LORD but do not mix the love of milk and meat which is excessive compassion.
V28 Moses was up their forty days and came back that his face glowed and he had to put a covering over it.

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.

2 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.

3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.

4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded[16] him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.

5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed[4] the name[5] of the LORD.

The LORD God

6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed[4], The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear[17] the guilty; visiting[10] the iniquity[18] of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.[19]


Take us for thine inheritance

9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.[20]

10 And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.

11 Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

19 All that openeth the matrix is mine;[22] and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.

20 But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem.[22] And none shall appear before me empty.

21 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.

The feasts

22 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end.

23 Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel.

I will cast out

24 For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year.

25 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.

26 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

27 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.

30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.

31 And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.

32 And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai.

33 And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face.

34 But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.

35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
